This wasn't me, but a friend of mine called me up one day during his first playthrough of Final Fantasy VII. He was up to the bit where you fight Jenova in the Whirlwind Maze in Disc 2, but kept dying, so he was looking for advice on how I did it. I kept explaining it was the easiest boss fight in the game, and you couldn't actually lose if you had at least one Fire Ring or Fire Amulet, but he kept calling bullshit, saying he had those, and thought I was being a deliberately unhelpful asshole. We nearly fell out over this, so I told him I'd come over to SHOW him how easy it was.
We booted up the save, and I jumped into the menu. I couldn't believe it. Everyone was on their initial equipment. He hadn't changed a single weapon, armour or accessory since the start of the game. He said "yeah, I keep picking those things up, but they don't seem to be changing anything". Much as I wanted to slap him for being a fool, I couldn't help but be impressed he'd made it so far.
